Welcome to the Squalicum Harbor Fishermen's Memorial web site. This site was designed to honor those Fishermen of Whatcom County that are listed on the memorial "Safe Return" located in Zuanich Point Park in Bellingham, Washington. Initiated in 1974 by the Puget Sound Gillnetter’s Women’s Auxiliary. They erected a memorial with the names carved into wooden panels. A large historic anchor was soon added to the temporary site. In 1993 the idea of expanding the theme of the anchor memorial came forward, to build another part of the monument that would be a little more visible, a little more imposing. On May 31st, Memorial Day, 1999 a dedication ceremony was held at Zuanich Point Park celebrating the newly installed monument, “Safe Return,” completing a journey that began 25 years earlier. |
